NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – University of Dayton forward
Obi Toppin has earned his fourth weekly honor from the Atlantic 10 this season. Toppin was named A-10 Rookie of the Week for his performance in a pair of Dayton wins over Saint Joseph's and Duquesne last week.
Toppin, a redshirt freshman from Ossining, N.Y., averaged 25.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game last week, while shooting .733 (22-30) FG and .875 (7-8) FT. He had career highs in points (25) and rebounds (12) against St. Joe's, and then upped his best in points to 26 in the Duquesne win.
This is Toppin's fourth A-10 weekly honor, the most of anyone this season. Davidson's Kellan Grady, who was named the league's player of the week this week, has earned that honor three times. Fordham's Nick Honor has been named the A-10 Rookie of the Week three times.
In addition to his 26 points against the Dukes, Toppin also had four steals and two blocked shots. 29 of his week's 51 points came in the second half. Dayton has won three straight, and during that streak Toppin's numbers are 23.3 ppg., 8.7 rpg., .707 FG and .846 FT. He has raised his scoring total in every game since Jan. 13 when he scored three points in the UMass win. Since then it has been 8, 10, 11, 19, 25 and 26.
His 59 dunks are seven away from the UD single-season record of 66, set by Chris Wright in 2009-10. The 59 dunks are also the most in Division I, two more than Texas big man Jaxon Mills. Through games of Feb. 3, Toppin leads the nation in field goal percentage (.691, 131-188). In addition to his dunks, Toppin is shooting .559 (71-127) on non-dunk field goal attempts.
UD is 15-7 overall and is tied for second in the A-10 with a 7-2 mark. The Flyers have two tough Atlantic 10 road games this week. UD is at Saint Louis, conference preseason favorite, on Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET. Dayton then visits defending league regular-season champ Rhode on Saturday.
