NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— The Atlantic 10 Conference announced Wednesday a league-record 3,290 student-athletes earned Commissioner's Honor Roll distinction in 2018-19. University of Dayton student-athletes contributed 216 of those individuals, even though UD sponsors teams in just 14 of the A-10's 19 sports.
Three Flyer teams tied for the most student-athletes in their respective sports -- baseball (24), softball (20) and men's tennis (8). Baseball finished second and men's tennis third at their post-season tournaments.
Designed to recognize excellence in the classroom, this is the second consecutive year the Commissioner's Honor Roll has been based on the entire academic year. Previously the award was granted following each semester. To be selected for the Commissioner's Honor Roll, a student-athlete in an Atlantic 10-sponsored sport must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Freshmen and graduate students are eligible to receive the award.
The 3,290 honorees tops last year's high-water mark of 3,168 unique student-athletes. In previous years, the yearly Commissioner's Honor Roll number was calculated by combining the fall and spring semester totals.
