Baseball To Play Pair Of Midweek Games Against Wright State And Butler

The Flyers Are 14-17 This Season

DAYTON – The University of Dayton baseball team will play a pair of midweek contests against Wright State and Butler. The Flyers will host the Raiders on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before heading to Indianapolis to take on the Bulldogs at 4 p.m. at Bulldog Park.
 
Both games will feature live stats, with Tuesday's contest against Wright State also having an ESPN+ stream and a radio stream courtesy of Gem City Sports.
 
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
The Flyers will enter the week with a 14-17 record after splitting four games last week. Dayton opened the week on Tuesday, defeating Ohio State 6-0 in front of a record-setting crowd at Day Air Ballpark. Graduate student Kenny Serwa pitched seven shutout innings in front of 3,859 fans, the highest attendance for a home game in program history.
 
Dayton then took one of three at Fordham over the weekend. Junior Ryan Steinhauer pitched the first complete game since Hunter Wolfe in February of 2019 against the Rams, striking out 10 in a 10-4 win on Friday. Graduate student Henry Strmecki also homered twice in the loss on Sunday.
 
Junior Keagan Calero also had a big week, hitting .417 in the four games. He leads the team with a .275 batting average with three home runs. He has 24 runs scored and eight stolen bases, both of which lead the team. Senior Marcos Pujols has been the team's main source of run production, leading the team with seven home runs and 22 RBIs, hitting .267 in 2022.
 
Graduate student Nick Meyer has been the most consistent force out of the Dayton bullpen, allowing just one run in 9.2 innings on the mound this year, posting a 2-1 record in nine appearances. Sophomore Eli Majick leads the team with 15 appearances in 2022. The lefty has a 2.75 ERA in 19.2 innings this season.
 
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
Wright State is 15-18 this season after a 1-3 week against Xavier and UIC. The Raiders fell on the road 13-4 at Xavier on Tuesday before taking one of three in conference play against UIC.
 
The Raiders were tabbed as the preseason favorites in the Horizon League, picked just ahead of UIC. Wright State is 8-4 in conference play this season, which leads the conference.
 
Jay Luikart leads the Raiders with a .348 batting average, one of four Wright State hitters with a batting average above .300. Luikart's eight home runs rank second on the team. Sammy Sass is the only Raider who has started every game this season, while Gehrig Anglin has started all but one. Anglin leads the team with 11 home runs and is tied for the team lead with 31 RBIs in 32 games this season.
 
Luikart also leads Wright State with a 2.53 ERA in 10.2 innings this season with a 2-1 record and a team-leading four saves. Garret Simpson leads the team with 17 appearances this season, and his 23.2 innings on the mound is most of any pitcher who has not started a game in 2022. Chris Gallagher has also made 15 appearances this season, posting a 4.37 ERA with 25 strikeouts.
 
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Butler is 16-20 this season and also went 1-3 over the past week. The Bulldogs fell 11-1 to Evansville before taking one of three against Georgetown. Butler will play Northern Kentucky at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in Indianapolis before taking on the Flyers.
 
The Bulldogs were picked to finish sixth of eight in the Big East ahead of Georgetown and Villanova. In six conference games, Butler is 2-4 against those two teams.
 
Entering the week, Aaron Steinhart leads the team with a .299 batting average in 34 starts this season. Steinhart also leads the team with eight doubles, seven home runs, and 27 RBIs. Ryan O'Halloran and Travis Holt are the only Bulldogs to start every game this season, with O'Halloran batting .286 and Holt hitting .280. Holt is tied with Steinhart with 40 hits this season to lead Butler, while Holt's 14 stolen bases are the most on the Bulldogs.
 
Derek Drees has been the most consistent Bulldog out of the bullpen, with four saves and a 0.74 ERA in 11 appearances this season. Drees also ranks second on the team with 38 strikeouts in just 24.1 innings, holding opposing hitters to a .176 batting average this season. Adrian Vega ranks right behind Drees with just a .181 batting average against in his 20.2 innings on the mound. Vega also has a team-leading 0.87 WHIP in nine appearances with one save for the Bulldogs.
 
MATCHUP HISTORY
This will mark the 133rd matchup between Dayton and Wright State. The Flyers are 44-87-1 against the Raiders, with Dayton losing the last 17 games between the two schools. Wright State won 14-0 in the first matchup this season back on March 8. Junior Anthony Hattrup went 4.2 innings with just one unearned run in the loss a little over a month ago, while Strmecki picked up two hits.
 
Wednesday's game will be the 21st game since 2005 against these two teams, with Dayton winning 11 of the last 20 games, including the last matchup on April 2, 2019. Cole Pletka went 5.2 innings, striking out 10 in a 6-1 win at Woerner Field. Jay Curtis doubled and Mitchell Garrity homered for Dayton.
