Baseball Set For Tuesday Matchup Against Purdue Fort Wayne

The Flyers Won 8-4 In 11 Innings In The First Matchup Of These Teams In 2022

DAYTON – The University of Dayton baseball team will return home for a midweek contest against Purdue Fort Wayne Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium.

The game will feature live stats, a radio broadcast courtesy of Gem City Sports, and an ESPN+ stream.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
The Flyers enter the week with a 19-24 record after going 1-2 at St. Bonaventure over the weekend. Dayton dropped both games of a Saturday doubleheader before taking the finale 11-4 on Mother's Day.

Senior Marcos Pujols hit two home runs in three games against the Bonnies and led the way with five RBIs in three games at St. Bonaventure. Pujols has played in every game this season for Dayton and leads the team with 10 home runs and 35 RBIs in 43 contests. His .292 batting average is also the best on the Flyers.

Pujols joins senior Jay Curtis as the only two to appear in every game this season. Curtis is hitting .280 with 32 RBIs and is tied for the team lead with nine doubles in 2022. His eight stolen bases rank third on the team and he hit his first career triple over the weekend as well. Junior Keagan Calero and graduate student Henry Strmecki each have a .284 batting average, with Calero leading the team with 32 runs scored and Strmecki ranking second on the team with six home runs.

The Dayton pitching staff moved into fourth place in program history with 384 strikeouts to this point in the season. This year's team passed Dayton's last Atlantic 10 Championship team from 2012, who struck out 381 batters. Now three of the top four strikeout totals have come in the last three full seasons.

Sophomore Eli Majick has made 21 appearances this season, three away from cracking the top 10 in a season in program history. Majick is 4-3 this season in 27 innings. Graduate student Nick Meyer leads the team with a 1.62 ERA in 13 appearances this season. Meyer has 22 strikeouts in 16.2 innings in 2022.

Redshirt junior Cody Whitten is slated to make his third start of the season against the Mastodons. The lefty is 2-1 this season and has 16 strikeouts in 17 innings.

SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
The Mastodons enter the week at 13-31 after splitting a doubleheader with UIC on Sunday. Purdue Fort Wayne was scheduled to play Youngstown State on Friday before that series was canceled. On Sunday, the Mastodons won the first game 3-2 before falling on Sunday night 11-6.

The Horizon League Preseason Poll tabbed Purdue Fort Wayne to finish seventh in the seven-team conference after finishing 11-35 in 2021. Cade Fitzpatrick leads the team with a .341 batting average in 40 games this season. Fitzpatrick is third on the team with seven home runs and is tied for the team lead with 28 RBIs. Jack Lang has 11 stolen bases to lead the Mastodons and is hitting .317 this season. His nine home runs are tied for the team lead.

Alex Jackson and Jarrett Bickel have each appeared in all 44 games for Purdue Fort Wayne this season. Jackson has started every game for the Mastodons and is hitting .291, while Bickel leads the way with 13 doubles this season.

On the mound, Rex Stills leads the team with a 3.56 ERA in 30.1 innings this season. Kevin Fee leads the Mastodons with 18 appearances this season in 21.2 innings.

Bryce Martens is scheduled to start the game for Purdue Fort Wayne. Martens will be making his fifth start this season. In his first 10 appearances he is 0-4 with a 13.95 ERA. In the first game of the season between these two teams, Martens tossed one scoreless inning against the Flyers.
