DAYTON - University of Dayton baseball redshirt sophomore
Alejandro Cazorla and track and field freshman
Kendall Johnson have been named the
Ohio's CollegeAdvantage Student-Athletes of the Week. These awards are for contests held Feb. 19-25.
Cazorla had a breakout performance at the toughest point of the Dayton schedule, as the Flyers took on No. 6 Vanderbilt and No. 1 Wake Forest this week. Cazorla hit .308 and reached base at a .438 clip to lead the #FlyBoys offense, slugging two home runs and a double, driving home four and scoring four for the week. The true highlight was his performance in the Flyers' upset win over Vanderbilt, as the Okotoks, Alberta, Canada native went 3-for-3 with a home run, double, and three RBI. Cazorla scored the first run of the fateful seven-run eighth inning, and then drove home two key insurance runs later in the same inning. He'd then go on to make it a homer in three straight games by launching his third of the season in the opener against No. 1 Wake Forest.
Johnson won the Atlantic 10 long jump title at the Virginia Beach Sports Center with a school record mark of 5.99m (19' 7¾"). Breaking her own record, the freshman on Friday in six jumps recorded three of the top four jumps in program history. The Tulsa, Oklahoma, native was named A-10 Rookie Of The Year and was the only freshman in the conference to win an individual championship event. Johnson was also part of the 4x400 relay team that set a new school record (3:49.84) and finished fourth in the conference. It was the second straight meet that Johnson,
Lauren Santiago,
Lianna Shakoor and
Rayana Burns broke the record.
