DAYTON - The Stats Perform FCS weekly football awards were announced and University of Dayton safety
Vincent Firenze was named national Defensive Player of the Week while the University of Dayton was named Honorable Mention Team of the Week.
Firenze fueled Dayton's defensive effort in the Pioneer Football League squad's 35-19 upset of previously unbeaten No. 16/19 Presbyterian. He racked up a career-high 14 tackles, including seven solos, and returned his third interception of the season 20 yards for a touchdown. The Flyers kept PC both 22 points and 102 yards below their pregame averages.
This is the first national honor for the redshirt sophomore, who earned his second PFL Defensive Player of the Week accolades as well.
The Dayton squad was also honorable mention Team of the Week after the upset, just behind North Dakota State who earned a 38-7 win over rivals South Dakota State.
The Flyers return to action this Saturday on the road at San Diego. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. ET.
