FLYERS ZIP PAST IPFW 4-3

Feb. 6, 2007

Fort Wayne, IN - After dropping the doubles point to IPFW, it seemed the University of Dayton men's tennis team was in for another early-season loss. But the Flyers recovered, winning four of six singles points in an impressive come from behind victory. With the win, UD improves to 2-4 on the season and has now won two of its last three matches to follow an 0-3 start.

Senior Tom Murphy (6-0) started off the singles competition with a win at first singles over IPFW's Nabil Mourad Filho, who tested Murphy in the first set, but still fell 7-5, 6-2. The Flyers also got a win from junior James O'Connell (5-2) who, playing at the two spot, knocked off IPFW's Hermann Kuschke 6-0, 7-5. Senior Rex Cabrera kept the run going with a victory at third singles against Nathan Jones 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Matt Sherman sealed the win for the Flyers at the four spot, where he downed IPFW's Arturo Salgado 6-3, 6-0.

Dayton then proceeded to drop the final two singles points, but it would not affect the final outcome.

In doubles play, the tandem of Murphy and O'Connell secured a Flyer win at first doubles where they defeated Filho and Renan Constantino 8-4.

UD will return home on Friday to take on Indiana State. The Sycamores and Flyers are scheduled to begin play at 3:00 p.m. at Dayton Center Courts.
