DAYTON CAN'T HOLD ON IN EXTRA-INNING LOSS TO OAKLAND, 5-4

March 10, 2007

DAYTON, Ohio - A four-run lead evaporated for Dayton in a 5-4 10-inning loss to Oakland on Saturday at Time Warner Cable Stadium. The Flyers and Golden Grizzlies will meet for the rubber game of the series on Sunday at Noon ET.

Sophomore lefthander Quinn Haselhorst was brilliant for Dayton allowing just one run on three hits over 7.0 innings pitched. The Flyer starter struck out three batters in a no decision on the afternoon.

For the second straight day, UD matched OU with eight hits each. Two Flyers each had a pair of hits on the day. Frank Tedesco was 2-for-4 with a stolen base, two runs scored and a RBI while Michael Massa finished 2-for-5 with a stolen base and a RBI of his own.

Joe McSoley and Shawn Gizynski both finished 1-for-3 with a run scored while McSoley added the lone extra-base hit for the Flyers - a double in the fifth inning.

Senior Bobby Getty added a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning for his third straight game with at least one RBI.

Southpaw Cale Ort suffered the loss after allowing two earned runs on four hits over 2.1 innings of relief. Alex Dye finished the day on the hill for Dayton and allowed only one hit in 0.2 innings pitched.

After both pitchers were in control for the first 2 1/2 innings, Dayton got on the board with a two-out run in the bottom of the third. Frank Tedesco singled to left centerfield and then put himself into scoring position with a stolen base. Michael Massa delivered a single up the middle for an RBI to put UD ahead 1-0.

The Flyers added three more runs in the fifth inning following a one-out double to left centerfield by Joe McSoley. Shawn Gizynski then walked and McSoley moved to third on a passed ball. Frank Tedesco followed with a RBI single through the right side of the infield to plate McSoley. After an Oakland pitching change, Massa singled through the left side to load the bases with one out. On the next at bat, Cole Tyrell hit a ground ball to short and the throw from the fielder was wide of first base, which kept the bases loaded as Gizynski scored. Bobby Getty lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to put Dayton ahead 4-0 after the bottom of the fifth inning.

Oakland got one back in the sixth inning on a squeeze bunt by Jonathan Zalenski to make it a 4-1 lead for Dayton.

The Golden Grizzlies then evened the score following a fielding error by the Flyers along with three hits in a three-run eighth inning rally. Oakland then scored on another squeeze bunt in the 10th inning to take the game 5-4.
