ST. LOUIS - Visiting Dayton jumped out to an early lead for the second consecutive day, but lost its second-straight one-run game to Saint Louis, 4-3 on Friday. The Flyers (20-33, 8-18 A-10) and Billkens will conclude their Atlantic 10 baseball series and their respective seasons on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET in a game that can be followed with Gametracker at www.DaytonFlyers.com.
UD built an early advantage with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Scott Dunwoody began a 3-for-4 day at the plate with a one-out single down the left field line. Then Bobby Getty's first of two doubles on the night allowed Dunwoody to reach third and score on the same play when the ball was misplayed by the right fielder. Joe McSoley followed with a two-out RBI single to left field and the Flyers were ahead 2-0.
Quinn Haselhorst and the Dayton defense were in charge for the first five innings of the game until a fielding error to leadoff the bottom of the sixth inning opened the gates for three unearned runs to score which gave Saint Louis a 3-2 lead.
The Billikens added an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh which put them on top 4-2 and chased Haselhorst from the game. UD's sophomore lefthander allowed on earned run on nine hits over 6.1 innings pitched while striking out eight batters. He was replaced by Chris Beesley who fanned a pair of SLU hitters while allowing only one hit in 1.1 innings pitched.
Scott Dunwoody started a Flyer comeback attempt in the top of the eighth with a leadoff double down the left field line. Bobby Getty followed with his second double of the day to right centerfield to send home Dunwoody and put the tying run into scoring position with no outs. Getty made his way to third on a dropped third strike that eventually led to Jeff Mercer being retired at first base. However, the Flyer senior would be stranded 90 feet away from tying the game after a pair of ground outs and UD lost 4-3.
The Flyers are now 6-12 in one-run games this season including a 1-8 mark in Atlantic 10 contests. The SLU series has also marked the first time this season that UD has not been hit by a pitch in consecutive games. Dayton leads the nation with 103 batters hit by pitch in 53 games played, a mark that ranks as the eighth highest total in NCAA single-season history.
