Fresh off a second-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Conference Indoor Championships, the University of Dayton track team took part in the Coastal Carolina University Invitational this past weekend. Although there was no team scoring at the event, the Flyers started off their outdoor season with 19 top-ten finishes at the two day event.
The field events started on Friday with freshman Johnna Zaccari taking first-place in the shot put with a hurl of 44-05.50. Zaccari has now won her event at three straight meets for the Flyers. Sophomore Sarah Allen also competed in the event and finished fifth with a toss of 42-09.75.
In the discus throw, freshman Emily Overmyer placed sixth (131-11.00).
Sophomore Katie DeVault led the way in the pole vault competition, finishing eighth and leaping to a height of 9-06.25
Megan Sweeney and two rookies, Lauryn Fougerousse and Tiffany Maske, matched each other with high jumps of 5-03.00 and were placed fourth, sixth, and eighth, respectively.
In the distance events, cross country coach Ann Alyanak, an Olympic hopeful, blew by the field in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 34:31.83. Sophomore Kristin Terry also competed and finished fourth overall (41:39.06).
Junior Sydney Hubbard paced the pack of Flyers in the 5,000 meter run with a fifth-place finish (19:05.43). Classmates Ellen Nienhaus (19:30.98) and Jacqueline Jaworek (19:31.35) came across 10th and 11th for the Flyers.
Freshman Maureen Bulgrin gave UD another top-ten distance finisher, as the rookie took ninth in the 3,000 meter run (10:34.60).
Two more freshmen, Brigitte Sherman and Liz Coorey fared well in the 1,500 meter run. Sherman took third with a time of 4:43.73, while Coorey claimed sixth-place in 4:45.25.
Sherman then finished in the top-ten for a second time with her performance in the 800 meter run where the rookie took third with a time of 2:19.28. Sophomore Kate Tejkl followed with a 10th-place finish (2:20.76), while Coorey clinched 11th in 2:21.06.
Junior Andrea Cornell was, once again, the top finisher for the Flyers in the hurdles. Cornell took 11th in the 100 meter event with a time of 15.66.
In the sprints, Stacy Chew and Lisa Aubry, also juniors, took eighth and 10th-place in the 400 meter dash. Chew crossed the line in 59.51, while Aubry came in just behind in 59.98.
Sophomore Brittany Thomas logged a time of 12.42 to take 11th in the 100 meter dash.
In the team relays, the 4x400 group finished in seventh place with a time of 4:07.50, while the 4x100 squad took ninth in 49.87.
After a successful start to the outdoor season, the Flyers will get to an enjoy a day in Myrtle Beach on Sunday before returning home for spring break. The Flyers will next be in action after classes resume on March 29 at the Miami University Invitational in Oxford, Ohio.
