DAYTON, Ohio -
The University of Dayton Division of Athletics continued its long tradition of success in the classroom by placing 108 student-athletes on the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll for the Fall 2008 semester.
The A-10 Honor Roll, which was released Thursday, honors each student-athlete with a 3.5 grade-point average or higher during the Fall 2008 semester. Dayton was second among the 14 Atlantic 10 Conference institutions in number of student-athletes recognized despite sponsoring fewer sports than all but one school in the league. The Flyers were just two shy of La Salle’s 110 student-athletes honored on the list. The Explorers sponsor 20 sports that compete in the A-10 compared to UD’s 14.
There were a total of 1,162 student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the Fall of 2008.
Success in the classroom is nothing new for UD student-athletes. The Flyers' combined cumulative grade point average is currently 3.1978. This semester, 143 of the Flyers’ 410 student athletes earned a GPA between 3.50-4.00; that’s 34.8 percent. Also, 70 percent (285) of the student-athletes earned at least a 3.0 GPA. In addition, UD has had 37 Academic All-Americans in the last eight years and at least one Academic All-American for 25 straight years.
The success in the classroom was also backed by the release of the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) reports on May 7.
Four different Flyer athletics programs had a perfect APR of 1000. UD men's cross country, men's golf, women's golf and men's tennis were recently honored with Public Recognition Awards by the NCAA for their continued achievement in the multi-year APR which included data for the 2003-2004 through 2006-2007 academic years.
Three other Dayton teams ranked among the top three performing programs in their respective conferences. Flyer men's basketball was also awarded a public recognition award on April 24 after posting an APR of 974 that ranks third in the Atlantic 10 Conference. UD football is second in the Pioneer Football League with a score of 977 while softball was third in the A-10 with an APR of 985.
