WICHITA, Kan. - University of Dayton redshirt senior catcher Scott Dunwoody has been named to the 2009 Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award Watch List.
Given annually, the Johnny Bench Award is given to the nation's top collegiate catcher. Past winners of the award include Ryan Garko with the Cleveland Indians and Buster Posey (San Francisco Giants). Dunwoody is the lone Atlantic 10 catcher named to this year's list.
"Scott Dunwoody has been a leader for us since the first day he joined our program," said head coach Tony Vittorio. " He has been a great player from a positional standpoint, but more importantly he has great character and represents our university well."
Dunwoody has started every game this season and is hitting .352 this season and ranks third on the Flyers squad with 13 doubles and fifth with 17 multi-hit games. Earlier this season he put together a 12-game hitting streak, and is currently on a seven-game hitting streak. Behind home plate, Dunwoody has caught 15 runners stealing and ranks second on the team with a .982 fielding percentage.
The award is presented at the end of June by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission.
The Flyers recently clinched a berth in the Atlantic 10 tournament held May 20-23 at Fifth Third Field, the Dayton Dragons' (Cincinnati Reds Single-A Affiliate) home field located in downtown Dayton.
