Dayton, OH - The University of Dayton men’s tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to the Butler Bulldogs on Tuesday afternoon.
Butler dominated all three doubles matches, giving them an early lead and setting the tone for what was to follow.
Austin Weigand and Robert Salcedo, paired at the No. 3 doubles position, fought to overcome Butler’s Ervin/B. Bayliss match-up, extending play to a tie-breaker set. In the end, they came up just short, falling 8-7, (7-5).
Weigand looked to earn Dayton their only point of the day at No. 6 singles, again forcing his opponent into a third set.
“We were so close in a number of the matches today,” commented senior Matt Sherman. “Butler is a very good team and we played hard, but just couldn’t seem to get ahead. I think the guys walked away optimistic. There is definitely improvement from last season and that’s something we can build on.”
The Flyers, now 2-5, hope to do just that on Friday, Feb. 12 as they take on Eastern Kentucky at 5 pm E.T.
