DAYTON, Ohio – University of Dayton track and field and cross country standouts Ashley Cattran and Emily Zimmerman have been selected to as Capital One Academic All-Americans®.
Cattran earned a spot as a First Team Academic All-American®, while Zimmerman was selected to the Third Team. The duo’s selections help extend a 27-year streak where a University of Dayton student-athlete has been selected as an Academic All-American®.
Cattran, a senior, was a second team Academic All-American® last season. She finished in the Top 10 in every event this outdoor season except for one. She was also the A-10’s Women’s Indoor Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Year this year and carries a 3.989 GPA. The senior from Centerville, Ohio was the 2010 Outdoor Track Student-Athlete of the Year. She placed first in the distance medley relay at the A-10 Indoor Championships and was third in the 800 meters. Cattran was also selected to the A-10’s Academic All-Conference team for the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Zimmerman, a junior, earned A-10 Second Team All-Conference accolades at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championship after finishing second in the 10,000-meter run and eighth in the 5,000-meter run. She also set a school record in the 5K with a time of 16:42.10 at the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships. Zimmerman holds the 10K school record with a time of 34:56.66, which she set at the NCAA Division I East Prelims.
The Dayton, Ohio native earned the Flyers’ Most Improved Runner Award. She is majoring in adolescence to young adult education and foreign language education while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average and was the A-10’s Student-Athlete of the Year during the 2011 outdoor season.
This season, the Flyers had six student-athletes qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, which is the most in school history. Senior thrower Mallory Barnes placed 18th in the hammer throw at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and was an All-American in the weight throw during the indoor season. Dayton also earned its second consecutive Atlantic 10 Indoor Championship and was second in the Outdoor Championships.
