DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton has a yearly tradition called Christmas on Campus in which young boys and girls from around the Dayton community come to campus to get the full experience of Christmas.
This year, inclement weather made it difficult for Christmas on Campus to take place, but that didn't stop the Dayton Baseball program.
On Tuesday, head coach
Tony Vittorio and some Flyer baseball players took presents to the K.I.N.D. (Kids In New Direction) organization in Dayton. Senior catcher Kurris Duggan even dressed up as Santa to bring cheer to the less fortunate.
Earlier this semester, Dayton baseball players were each paired up with a child in order to serve as a mentor to the kids, ranging from 5-12 years old. The Flyers will help the kids in anyway they can, and even provided their phone numbers and emails so the young boys and girls can stay in contact throughout the season. The players wrote letters and gave presents to their "little brother or sister" for Christmas this year. On Tuesday, Santa's helpers delivered those presents.
Coach Vittorio also promised that the team will try and have a special K.I.N.D. day for one of the home baseball games in 2014.
"We have been able to spend time with the K.I.N.D. kids for the past few years," Vittorio said. "It is an outstanding after-school program that gives back to those less fortunate. Every time our players are around the kids, it not only brings a smile to the kids' faces, but also our players' faces. We enjoy being able to mentor the kids in the program. I am very impressed with K.I.N.D.'s leadership."
