BOSTON CELTICS TO SIGN CHRIS JOHNSON TO A 10-DAY CONTRACT

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Boston Celtics plan to fill one of their vacant roster spots by signing University of Dayton alum Chris Johnson to a 10-day contract.

Danny Ainge, Boston's president of basketball operations, said the Celtics would sign the 6-foot-6 small forward on Friday.

"Chris has been playing very well," Ainge said. "We need a wing player, someone that can shoot the ball. So Chris will add some depth to our team now."

Johnson, who played for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the D-League, appeared in 20 games (all starts) for the Vipers while averaging 19.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. He also shot 36.7 percent on 3s and 47 percent from the field.

It will be Johnson's second stint in the NBA. Last year he was a member of the Memphis Grizzlies. In eight games with Memphis last season Johnson averaged 3.8 points and 1.4 rebounds.

The 6-foot-6 forward played in 138 games during his Flyer career, the most in Dayton basketball history. He scored 1,467 points, 21st in UD history, including averaging a career-high 12.4 points per game during the 2011-12 season.

Johnson is the only college basketball player in the last 20 years to have 1,400 points, 800 rebounds, 300 offensive rebounds and 200 three-pointers while shooting at least 80 percent from the line.

Johnson joins fellow UD alum and current New Orleans Hornets guard Brian Roberts in the NBA. Roberts and Johnson are two of the 19 former Flyers who have played in the NBA.

Johnson will join the Celtics in time for their game Friday night against the Los Angeles Lakers in Boston.
