As the 2014-15 National Basketball Association season approaches, two former Flyers are continuing Dayton's long-lasting tradition in the league.
Flyer alumni
Brian Roberts (Charlotte Hornets) and
Chris Johnson (Philadelphia 76ers) earned opening-day roster spots to start the 2014-15 season.
Roberts and Johnson are two of the 19 former Flyers who have played in the NBA. It's a linage that dates back to the early 1950s.
Roberts, 28, signed with the Hornets in July to back up Kemba Walker at point guard. He put himself in the record books last year as he became the 2013-14 NBA free throw "champion." Roberts, in his second season with New Orleans, made 125 of 133 free throws last season for ninth-best in NBA history, .940.
Roberts' 1,962 career points at Dayton are fourth-best at UD, only behind Roosevelt Chapman's 2,233, Don May's 1,980 and Henry Finkel's 1,968. He is the Flyer career record holder in three-pointers made (293) and 3-pt. FG% (44.1%). Roberts is one of just four UD players to be named an outright team MVP three times.
Johnson was signed by the 76ers in September after playing last season with the Boston Celtics. In 40 games with the Celtics, the 6'6" Johnson averaged 6.3 points (on 39.7 percent shooting) and 2.4 rebounds per game.
Johnson played in 138 games during his Flyer career, the most in Dayton basketball history. He scored 1,467 points, 21st in UD history. He is also the only college basketball player in the last 20 years to have 1,400 points, 800 rebounds, 300 offensive rebounds and 200 three-pointers while shooting at least 80 percent from the line.
