CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Dayton baseball team split its final two games of the Riverview Inn Classic on Saturday, suffering a 16-1 loss to Xavier before falling to Bradley, 11-5.
The Flyers were looking for their first win of the weekend after losing the tournament opener to Austin Peay on Friday.
Game 1 – Xavier 16, Dayton 1
Dayton started the second day of the Riverview Inn Classic with a 16-1 loss to former Atlantic 10 rival Xavier.
Xavier jumped ahead in the top of the second inning with a single run, putting Dayton down 1-0 early.
The Musketeers added to their lead in the third with four more runs, including a three run home run by Daniel Rizzie.
Dayton headed into the bottom half of the third with a 5-0 deficit.
The Flyers got on the board in the third when senior
Kuris Duggan scored on a passed ball, narrowing the gap to four. The Dayton catcher had singled to get on base, went to second on a passed ball, and stole third before coming home on the free pass.
In the fourth, the Musketeers got the run back by scoring via a wild pitch by the Flyers. They added two more on back-to-back solo home runs in the fifth to make it an 8-1 ball game.
Xavier made it 9-1 in the sixth after scoring on a passed ball. In the seventh, the Musketeers got five more runs to make it a double-digit lead for the former A10 school.
The Flyers found themselves down 14-1 going into the late stages of the game.
Before the game ended, Xavier recorded another pair of runs and defeated the Flyers by a score of 16-1.
Starting pitcher
Joe Wahl (0-3) was saddled with the loss, giving up five runs on six hits in three innings on the mound.
Dayton recorded just four hits in the contest and allowed 19 to the Musketeers. Xavier did commit two errors in the game however.

Game 2 – Bradley 11, Dayton 5
In the second game of the afternoon, Dayton battled Bradley, but fell short, suffering an 11-5 loss to the Braves.
After getting off to a slow start offensively in game one, the Flyers stormed out of the gates against Bradley, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.
Junior
Zach Schira started things off with an RBI single to center. Senior
Robby Sunderman followed up with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring sophomore
Aaron Huesman for an unearned run. Schira then scored the third run on a delayed steal attempt in which senior
Mark Podlas attempted to steal second.
The Braves countered with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to close the gap to 3-2 in Dayton's favor.
The Flyers added to their advantage in the top of the third with an RBI single by Sunderman.
A solo shot by Bradley and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third evened the score up at 4-4.
Schira recorded his second RBI of the game in the fifth inning on an RBI single to left-center, putting the Flyers ahead once again.
Bradley was right there to respond though and tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom half of the inning. The Braves then took their first lead of the game in the sixth with a pair of doubles and a UD error. Bradley held a slim 7-5 lead over the Flyers.
In the eighth inning, Bradley began to run away with the game as they scored four runs, including a three run home run. That made it an 11-5 contest and all but sealed the Flyers' fate.
In the end, Dayton was not able to get the early lead back and dropped its third game of the tournament.
Starter
Charlie Dant (2-1) suffered the loss after allowing five earned runs in 5 2/3 innings.
Offensively, the Flyers managed eight hits in the ball game, but were shutout over the last four innings. Schira and Sunderman had two RBI each while Wolford, Huesman, and Schira had two-hit games for Dayton.
The Flyers (3-6) will return home to host Baldwin-Wallace at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
