DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team continued play in the 2014 Flyer Classic and picked up an important 9-4 victory over Canisius, who was 10-4 entering the game.
Senior
Mark Podlas put Dayton up in the bottom of the second with a solo home run to left, his first of the season.
Canisius got the run back in the third with a sacrifice fly, evening the score at 1-1.
The Golden Griffins threatened to score again in the fourth by loading the bases, but the Dayton defense left all three runners stranded and kept the score deadlocked at one run apiece.
Canisius was able to take the lead in the fifth with a pair of runs, making it a 3-1 contest.
The Flyers responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-3 advantage over the Grifs. Â Junior
Greg Rhude started the rally by scoring on an error by the Canisius defense. Senior
Robby Sunderman then stepped up and ripped a two-run double to left, plating redshirt-freshman
Glenn Jones and senior
Kuris Duggan.
Dayton added to its lead in the seventh with a pair of runs on a double to left by junior
Zach Schira. That put the Flyers up three with just two innings to go.
In the bottom of the eighth, Sunderman kept his outstanding performance going with a two-run triple to deep left, pushing Dayton's lead to 8-3. Junior
Sergio Plasencia followed up with an RBI groundout to make it a six-run game.
Canisius scored a single run in the ninth, but it would not be enough as Dayton cruised to a 9-4 win over the Grifs.
Starter
Noah Buettgen (2-3) had a strong performance for Dayton on the mound, giving up three runs, just two earned, on five hits in seven innings. Senior
Bryce Lahrman (S,2) came in in relief and picked up the save, his second of the season.
It marked the first win for the Flyers in 10 contests as UD ended its losing streak. Offensively, Dayton racked up 10 hits. Sunderman led the team with another 4-for-5 outing, his second in as many games. Sunderman also drove in four runs and scored twice. Huesman and Schira also had two-hit games for UD.
The Flyers (4-12) finish up the Flyer Classic on Sunday when they host Canisius again at 12 p.m. and Miami (OH) at 4 p.m.
