DAYTON BASEBALL HOLDS ON FOR 7-6 VICTORY OVER EMU

Box Score
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team hosted Eastern Michigan Wednesday and used an early lead to take a 7-6 win from the Eagles.

The umpires called the game after seven innings due to darkness.

Dayton opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second when senior Ryan Berry singled to lead off the inning, then scored on an RBI double by junior AJ Ryan. The Flyers doubled their tally before the frame was over as Ryan scored while junior Zach Schira was in a run down. The run scored before the out was recorded, giving the Flyers a 2-0 lead.

In the third, UD added a run when senior Robby Sunderman stole third then went home after a throwing error by the EMU catcher. Senior Ryan Berry continued the assault with a solo home run to left, his fourth of the season. That extended Dayton's advantage to four runs.

The Flyers made it a 5-0 ball game in the fourth with an RBI single by Sunderman, plating junior Greg Rhude. Sunderman eventually came around to score on an infield single by junior Alex Harris before Ryan's RBI groundout made it a 7-0 game in UD's favor.

Eastern Michigan was able to break up the shutout in the sixth with pair of runs, narrowing Dayton's lead to five. The Eagles threatened further, but a diving play in center by Harris saved a potential run for the Flyers.

In the top of the seventh, EMU continued its rally with four more runs, making it a one-run game at 7-6. The Eagles were unable to get any closer in the inning and that would end up being the final opportunity.

Due to darkness, the game was called in the middle of the seventh, giving the Flyers the 7-6 victory.

Freshman starter Nick Gobert (1-1) got the nod for the second time this season and went 5 2/3 innings, allowing just two runs on five hits. Fellow freshman Garrett Atkinson and Mark Giesler both saw time in relief as well. Senior Nate Harris (S, 2) retired the final batter and left runners stranded to pick up the save.

Offensively, Dayton tallied seven runs on 10 hits in the contest while stealing five bases. Ryan led the way with two hits and two RBI and Berry chipped in an RBI and two hits as well.

The Flyers (10-16, 3-3 A10) will head back out on the road this weekend for a three-game series at Massachusetts.
