DAYTON BASEBALL SUMMER LEAGUES UPDATE

The 2014 Dayton Flyers baseball team has 15 players that will be playing collegiate summer ball this year. These Flyers span the states of Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

Junior right-hander Charlie Dant will be pitching for the Chatam A's of the Cape Cod League. The Cape League is recognized as the best amateur summer leagues in the country by college coaches and professional baseball scouts. Players from across the USA and representing all college divisions are recruited to play in the 10-team loop. Dant is currently 1-0 on the mound, surrendering one hit and two walks in his first outing with the A's. After spending last summer on the Vermont Mountaineers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, senior first baseman A.J. Ryan will be switching uniforms in the league and playing for the Danbury Westerners. NECBL play started in 1994 and has become a nationally recognized top-tier league that plays in all six New England states and recruits players attending U.S colleges from New England, the other forty-four States and foreign countries. Through 12 games, Ryan is batting .239 with four doubles, a home run, and four RBI.

Senior Zach Schira will be patrolling the outfield this summer for the Springfield Sliders of the Prospect League in Springfield, Illinois. In other Prospect League action, redshirt freshman pitcher Jason Johnson and senior shortstop Greg Rhude team up for the Chillicothe Paints in Chillicothe, Ohio. Junior pitcher Nick Weybright will toe the rubber this summer for the Champion City Kings in their inaugural season in Springfield, Ohio. The Prospect League fields teams in cities throughout Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Tennessee, West Virginia and Missouri. Through 19 games, Schira is batting .219 with two doubles, a triple, and five RBI. Through 15 games, Rhude is batting .179 with a double, a triple, and a home run. On the mound, Johnson has a 5.22 ERA after logging 10.1 innings, and 13 strikeouts.

Sophomore pitchers Nick Gobert and Mark Giesler will be playing in front of their hometown fans this summer for the Dubois County Bombers of the Ohio Valley League in Huntingburg, Indiana. Joining them on the diamond is redshirt sophomore outfielder Glenn Jones. A long-time member of the Prospect League, the Bombers joined the Ohio Valley League in 2013. League Stadium, home of the bombers, opened in 1894 and was renovated in 1991 for the filming of the movie A League of Their Own. Through 13 games, Giesler is batting .333 with four RBI's and holds a 6.75 ERA on the mound through five innings of work. Gobert boasts a .275 average at the plate with two doubles and four RBI while producing a 9.82 ERA through seven innings of work. Jones is hitting .222 at the plate with six stolen bases and seven RBI.

Senior and Second Team All-Atlantic 10 outfielder Alex Harris will be playing for the Fayetteville Swampdogs of the Coastal Plain Collegiate League in Fayetteville, North Carolina this summer. Celebrating its 18th season in 2014, the CPL proudly features 14 teams across the Carolinas and Virginia. Many of the CPL teams play in former minor league stadiums and cities, as well as in newly constructed stadiums that meet Class A standards. Some of the most notable alumni include 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander, Ryan Zimmerman, Kevin Youkilis, and NFL Super Bowl XLVIII champion quarterback Russell Wilson. Through 11 games Harris is hitting .242 with five stolen bases in six tries

Junior Aaron Huesman will be playing for the Lakeshore Chinooks of the Northwoods league, in Mequon, Wisconsin. The Dublin, Ohio native joins a league rich in history. The Northwoods League has more teams, draws more fans and plays more games than any other Summer Collegiate Baseball League. Teams are run similar to a professional minor league team, providing players an opportunity to play under the same conditions, using wooden bats and minor league specification baseballs. Teams play 72 games scheduled over a 76-day season running from late May to mid-August. Through 14 games, Huesman has put up a .256 average with six RBI and two stolen bases.

Sophomore catcher Matt Poland and junior left-handed pitcher Jack Rose will be playing in Celina, Ohio for the Grand Lake Mariners, of the Great Lakes Collegiate League this summer. Joining them in the GLSCL for the summer are redshirt freshman Justin Wampler and sophomore Brad Burkhart. Wampler will play for the Hamilton Joes out of Hamilton, Ohio and Burkhart will play for the Cincinnati Steam out of Cincinnati, Ohio. The GLSCL is affiliated with the National Alliance of Collegiate Summer Baseball and comprises teams with college baseball players from around North America. The League is sanctioned and supported by Major League Baseball. Through 13 games, Wampler boasts a .314 average with four RBI, eight walks, five hit by pitches, and five stolen bases. After pitching six innings on the bump, Burkhart posts a 1.50 ERA with five strikeouts and a save.

The Flyers finished 2014 with a 24-30 record overall and a 14-13 A-10 mark and a berth in the A-10 Tournament.
