ANAHEIM - Continuing their commitment to enhancing the non-conference schedule and increasing national exposure, the University of Dayton Flyers were announced as a part of the 2016 DIRECTV Wooden Legacy eight-team field.
Played in Anaheim, Calif., the annual tournament is dedicated to the legendary coach who delivered 10 national championships. Joining the Flyers in 2016 are Cal State Northridge (Big West), Nebraska (Big Ten), New Mexico (Mountain West), Portland (West Coast), Texas A&M (Southeastern) UCLA (Pac 12) and Virginia Tech (Atlantic Coast).
"Playing in tournaments like this serve two purposes," UD Vice-President and Director of Athletics
Neil Sullivan said. "With the strength of our basketball program and how our fans travel to support us, we are a very attractive team for these tournaments. That was clearly evident last night in here in Orlando. The atmosphere in the building felt more like a tournament game in March than in November."
"For us, it gives us games against NCAA-caliber teams, on a neutral court, in areas of the country that we have alumni or at locations that our fans enjoy traveling to. The fact that these games are televised nationally are great for the basketball program and the University."
The 2016 DIRECTV Wooden Legacy will be played on November 24 and 25 in Cal State Fullerton's Titan Gym with the final day of play on November 27 at the Honda Center.
This is the fifth consecutive season the Flyers have played in a tournament owned and operated by ESPN Events.
The Charlotte, N.C., based group manages six multi-team events consisting of the Gildan Charleston Classic, Puerto Rico Tip-Off, DIRECTV Wooden Legacy, AdvoCare Invitational, NIT Season Tip-Off and Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic.
The multi-day, destination events staged from Charleston, S.C., San Juan, Puerto Rico, Orange County, Calif., Orlando and Honolulu are all bracket-format tournaments featuring 12 games over three days. The teams compete once per day, advancing with a victory. The two remaining undefeated teams will face off in a championship game. The Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic will be announced in late December surrounding the event.
