ST. LOUIS – University of Dayton junior cornerback
Christian Searles was named Defensive Player of the Week after helping Dayton to its third straight win Saturday at Jacksonville.
Searles intercepted three passes in UD's 36-16 win over the Dolphins. The Chicago Mt. Carmel High School product tied the Dayton record for interception in a game. He is the 10th Dayton player to have three interceptions in a single game. The previous nine were Paul Spakowski (1951), Jim Spoerl (1953), Bob Cyphers (1959), Jack Unverferth (1961), Gary Hussion (1965), Bob Smith (1983), Aaron Furman (2002) and Mark Kasmer (2002).
Searles was also in on two tackles and broke up a pass. On special teams, he returned three punts for 43 yards.
On the season, Searles is second in the PFL in passes defended (1.43 per game). He leads the Flyers in passes broken up (7) and is tied for second in interceptions (3). Dayton leads the PFL and is second in FCS football in interceptions this season (12).
Searles was also College Sports Madness' PFL Defensive Player of the Week.Â
Dayton is 5-2 on the year and third in the PFL with a 3-1 record.  UD will take on Butler in Indianapolis Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.
