DAYTON FLYERS 2015-16 YEAR IN REVIEW

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton had a school year to remember in 2015-16, with multiple Atlantic 10 Championships, individual accolades for both athletic and academic achievement, and new records set in multiple sports.

Here's a look at some of the highlights from the year.

Baseball
-    Redshirt-senior Mitch Coughlin was named to the 2016 Academic All-Atlantic 10 team.
-    Two others garnered All-Atlantic 10 honors: Nick Weybright (Atlantic 10 Second Team) and Austin Cline (Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team).
-    Senior pitcher Charlie Dant moved into first all-time at Dayton in career starts, second in innings pitched, and fourth in strikeouts.

Men's Basketball
-    Dayton earned an Atlantic 10 regular season co-champion title with a win over VCU on March 5, 2016.
-    The Flyers made their third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament
-    Two players were named All-Atlantic 10: junior Charles Cooke (First Team and All-Defensive Team) and senior Dyshawn Pierre (Second Team).
-    Redshirt Freshman Steve McElvene set the new mark for single-season blocked shots with 55. 

Women's Basketball
-    Two Flyers earned Atlantic 10 postseason honors: senior Jodie Cornelie-Sigmundova (Defensive Player of the Year) and freshman Lauren Cannatelli (Rookie of the Year).
-    Cornelie-Sigmundova was named to the A-10 All-Academic Team for the second-consecutive season and was also honored, nationally, as an Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar.
-    Dayton made its ninth consecutive national postseason appearance with a trip to the 2016 WNIT.

Men's Cross Country
-    Dayton was named a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team for the 2015 cross country season. The Flyers posted the 10th best GPA in the nation and tops in the Atlantic 10. It marks the 21st consecutive season Dayton has earned the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team recognition.
-    Hunter Johnston was selected to the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Second Team. 
-    Senior Kyle Lach broke Dayton's 3000-meter run record.

Women's Cross Country
-    Sophomore Emily Leonard was an Atlantic 10 All-Conference performer, three-time A-10 Performer of the Week, and set the new Dayton record for the 6K run.
-    Rookie Taylor Vernot became the first freshman in UD history to earn Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors.

Football
-    Dayton was the Pioneer Football League co-champions and hosted its first-ever FCS Playoff Game.
-    Head Coach Rick Chamberlin was both the AFCA Regional and PFL Coach of the Year, while 14 Flyers earned All-PFL selections, including eight first-team members and two Players of the Year: Nick Kaczkowski (Co-Special Teams Player of the Year) and Christopher Beaschler (PFL Co-Student-Athlete of the Year).
-    Beaschler was also a First Team Academic All-American.
-    Four records fell during the season: Connor Kacsor (career rushing yards, 3,543), Sean Smith (single-season punting average, 41.7 yards per punt) and William Will (single-season PAT%, 33-33, tied; single-season FG's, 17, tied).

Men's Golf
-    Dayton finished in third place at the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship, the second-best finish in program history.
-    Junior Nick Paxson was the team leader for the season and had the team's top finish at the championship after tying for seventh place overall.
-    Sophomore Tripp French was named to the A-10 All-Conference Team.

Women's Golf
-    The Flyers finished fourth at the 2016 MAAC Championship, improving on its fifth-place finish in 2015.
-    Senior Amalia Emma was the team's top finisher in seventh place, earning a spot on the MAAC All-Conference Team.
-    Four Flyers were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team and three named Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholars.

Rowing
-    The Varsity 8+ boat took first place in the petite final at the 2016 A-10 Rowing Championship and earned second place medals at the 2016 Lubbers Cup and the 2016 Cincinnati Regatta.
-    Senior Erin Mohney was named First Team All-Atlantic 10, selected to the A-10 All-Academic Team and was one of Dayton's 2016 Presidential Scholar-Athletes.
-    Four Flyers were named Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athletes: juniors Kayla Contardi and Chloe Hollinden, and seniors Erin Mohney and Allie Rogers.

Men's Soccer
-    Were the 2015 Atlantic 10 Tournament Champions and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
-    The Flyers were the No. 1 scoring offense in NCAA Division I, setting the school record for goals in a season.
-    Senior Amass Amankona earned All-American honors, was a MAC Herman National Player of the Year semifinalist, the A-10 Player and Midfielder of the year, a Scholar All-American, Senior CLASS Award Top 10 Finalist and was drafted with the 46th pick of the MLS SuperDraft by Real Salt Lake FC.

Women's Soccer
-    Head Coach Mike Tucker became one of just 17 active coaches to earn 300 career wins (currently at 304) and the Flyers broke two school records: Ashley Campbell (career goals scored – 63), Nicole Waters (career assists – 54).
-    Nicole Waters, back-to-back Atlantic 10 Midfielder of the Year in 2014 and 2015, was named a Senior CLASS Second Team All-American.
-    Ashley Campbell, a two-time A-10 Offensive Player of the Year, was named Dayton's 2016 NCAA Woman of the Year.

Softball
-    Sophomore Manda Cash was named Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year after leading the conference in strikeouts, strikeouts per nine innings, and having the second-lowest ERA.
-    Cash and junior Gabrielle Snyder were named First Team All-NFCA Mid-Atlantic region, marking the first time in program history that two Flyers made first team all-region.
-    The team ERA of 1.94 was the 10th best earned run average in NCAA Division I in 2016.

Men's Tennis
-    Freshman Jordan Benjamin was named the Atlantic 10's Outstanding Rookie Performer, winning eight Rookie of the Week awards during the season.
-    Sophomore Carsten Fisher was named All-Atlantic 10 First Team, winning Player of the Week honors six times during the 2016 campaign.
-    The team won 16 matches and advanced to the semifinal of the Atlantic 10 Championship for the first time in a decade.

Women's Tennis
-    Pulled an upset in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship for the second year in a row on the way to a 15-win season.
-    Awarded for having the highest team grade point average in Dayton Athletics for 2015-16.
-    Sophomore Marlys Bridgham was named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team for the second time in her career.

Women's Track and Field
-    There were four new school records and 26 Top 5 all-time marks in Dayton history.
-    Junior Jenni Rossi was named Atlantic 10 Field Performer of the year in both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
-    Freshman Taylor Vernot earned the Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Rookie award for the outdoor season.

Volleyball
-    The Flyers claimed four year-end Atlantic 10 awards for the second-consecutive year. Senior Alaina Turner (Player of the Year), senior Janna Krafka (Libero of the Year), sophomore Jane Emmenecker (Setter of the Year) and Head Coach Tim Horsmon (Co-Coach of the Year).
-    Dayton captured the Atlantic 10 Regular Season crown for the 12th time in history and won the program's 10th A-10 Tournament championship.
-    They made the NCAA Tournament for the 11th time in program history, advancing to the Second Round for the seventh time.
