NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – University of Dayton forward
Obi Toppin was named the Atlantic 10's Men's Basketball Co-Player of the Week for his performance in Dayton's 86-81 win over Indiana State in the season opener for both teams.
The redshirt sophomore from Brooklyn scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, matching his best board effort. Toppin scored 16 points in the second half, including eight of UD's final 14 points in the last 3:25 as Dayton protected its lead in the one-to-two possession end game. He made the first of nine free throws the Flyers made in the final 1:41 (Obi made three of four free throws in that time frame), and closed out to contest Indiana State's potential game-tying three pointer.
For the game, Toppin was 10 of 16 from the field, and 8 of 11 from the line, with three assists and two blocks. He also had six dunks.
His performance capped a week where he was named to both the James Naismith Trophy and Lute Olson Award Watch Lists for national player of the year. The Preseason First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection is also on the Karl Malone Award Watch List, which goes to the top collegiate power forward.
Toppin shared this week's A-10 Player of the Week Award with Richmond's Nick Sherrod.
Dayton is back on the court Saturday, when the Flyers welcome Charleston Southern to UD Arena. Game time is 7 p.m. ET.
