NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – University of Dayton forward Obi Toppin has earned his seventh weekly honor from the Atlantic 10 this season.  Toppin was named A-10 Rookie of the Week after leading the Flyers to s pair of wins last week.

Toppin, a redshirt freshman from Ossining, N.Y., averaged 16.0 points and 5.5 rebounds, while shooting .636 (14-22) from the field and .800 (4-5) from the line in wins over La Salle and Duquesne.  

He had 13 points against LaSalle.  At Duquesne, foul trouble limited him to 23 minutes, but he still managed 19 points and seven rebounds.

During the week, Toppin set the Flyer record for total points by s freshman.  His 447 points eclipsed Tiny Stanley's 431 in 1997-98.   Toppin's average of a team-high 14.4 points a game is higher than Johnny Davis' record set when Davis was a freshman in 1973-74.  Toppin's field goal percentage of .673 (189-281) is higher than Chris Wright's freshman record of .602 (59-98) set in 2007-08.

Toppin is fourth nationally in FG% and second in dunks (75).  In addition to leading UD in scoring and field goal percentage, he is also third on the team in rebounding (5.6) and is second in free throw percentage (.718, 61-85).

This is Toppin's seventh A-10 weekly honor, the most of anyone this season.  Fordham's Nick Honor has been named the A-10 Rookie of the Week four times, and no player has earned more than three Player of the Week accolades.

Dayton finished the regular season 21-10 overall and third place in the A-10 with a 13-5 record.    The Flyers will play in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship in Brooklyn's Barclays Center on Friday, March 15 against the winner that emerges from Fordham, Richmond and Saint Louis.  Game time is 8:30 p.m. ET.
