NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – University of Dayton guard
Jalen Crutcher was named the Atlantic 10's Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. Crutcher had a significant impact in Dayton's wins over St. Bonaventure at home and at Richmond last week.
Dayton is 18-2 overall, 7-0 in the Atlantic 10 and ranked seventh in the latest Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls. The Flyers knocked off two of the teams right behind them in the conference standings. Both St. Bonaventure and Richmond came into their games with UD with one conference loss.
Crutcher, a junior from Memphis, helped extend UD's winning streak to nine games. He averaged 23.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists (with just two turnovers) and shot .680 (17-25) from the field and .563 (9-16) from three-point range.
He tied his old career high with 23 points in the St. Bonaventure win, and upped it with 24 at Richmond. Down the stretch at Richmond, the Spiders had battled back to get the margin to single digits with a 9-0 run, and Crutcher's three-pointer with 3:24 left was a much-needed dagger. He also flirted with the first triple-double in UD history with 24 points, eight rebounds and seven assists at Richmond.
The Flyer point guard has scored 20, 21, 23 and 24 points in his last four games, and is two points away from 1,000 points in his career.
Crutcher is the first player to earn back-to-back Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honors this season, and is the first-ever Flyer to be named A-10 Player of the Week two times in a row. Oddly enough, over the weekend he was tabbed college basketball's "Best Supporting Actor" during a segment on CBS' studio show leading into televised games on Saturday.
For the season, Crutcher leads Dayton in minutes played (33.0) and assists (5.2). He is second on the team in scoring (14.7), free throw percentage (.816, 40-49) and three-point field goal percentage (.421, 48-114). In the Atlantic 10 Conference, he is fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.36), fifth in assists, fifth in 3-pt. FG's made per game (2.5) and ninth in free throw percentage. He is the only A-10 player in the top 10 of those categories.
UD plays at Duquesne on Wednesday and then welcomes Fordham to sold-out UD Arena on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET.
