DaRon Holmes II Named Joe Gavin/Joe Quinn Memorial Award Winner By Dayton Agonis Club

Award Recognizes The “Outstanding Accomplishments Of A University Of Dayton Athlete”

DAYTON – University of Dayton freshman forward DaRon Holmes II will be honored Tuesday evening by the Dayton Agonis Club.  Holmes will be presented the Joe Gavin/Joe Quinn Memorial Award, which goes to the top Flyer student-athlete in a given school year as voted on by the membership of the Agonis Club.

Holmes was the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, Second Team All-Atlantic 10, and a member of the Atlantic 10 All-Defensive Team.  He was Dayton's leading scorer (12.8 ppg) and second-leading rebounder (6.1 rpg).  He shattered the Flyer single-season blocked shot record with 81 (the old record was 55).  Holmes averaged 20.0 points per game over the last five games of the season (a win over A-10 regular season championship Davidson, two A-10 tournament games, and two NIT games.)

Hailing from Goodyear, Ariz., Holmes led the nation's freshman in dunks (82) and was sixth overall.  He was UD's co-MVP in 2021-22, sharing the honor with Toumani Camara and Malachi Smith.  Holmes and Smith were the first two Flyer freshman men's basketball players named MVP.

Holmes is also the first true freshman to win the Gavin/Quinn award.  Keith Waleskowski was named as a redshirt freshman in 2001.

The banquet will be held at the Presidential Banquet Center in Kettering.  Jim Place, a 1968 Dayton football co-captain whose Hall of Fame career as an educator and coach has spanned more than 50 years, will be the keynote speaker.

Other award winners are:
  • Mike Kelly/Don Donoher Coaching Award – Scott Molfenter
  • Beno Keiter/Russ Guerra (Area High School) – Gabe Cupps
  • Dr. Dave Reese Award (Wright State) – Trey Calvin
  • Bill Gunlock Award (Miami) – Jack Sorenson
  • Dave Hall Award (athlete attending college outside the area) – Austin Greaser
