EUGENE, Ore.- University of Dayton track and field celebrated a first on Thursday night at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships when
Casey Bogues competed in the javelin final and
Kendall Johnson competed in the long jump final. Only four Flyers have ever reached the Outdoor Championships and it was the first time ever that two Flyers competed in the same year. Both Bogues and Johnson walked away from Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon with Honorable Mention All-American Honors.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Casey Bogues connected on her second throw in the javelin with her third-best mark this year at 50.15m. The Red Bank, New Jersey native finished 20th and was named Honorable Mention All-American. She becomes just the second Flyer ever to make multiple appearances at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Bogues is now in the record books with Mallory Barnes, who competed in the hammer throw in 2010 and 2011. The redshirt junior made two trips to Hayward Field in the summer of 2021, when she finished 11th at the NCAA Championships and competed in the 2020-21 Olympic U.S. Track & Field Team Trials. The three-time Atlantic 10 Champion in javelin hopes to accomplish that same goal this year and will learn about the time trials later this week.
- Kendall Johnson landed on her second jump at 5.82m to finish 23rd and Honorable Mention All-American. The A-10 All-Rookie Team performer became the first Flyer ever to compete at the NCAA Championships as a Freshman. A four-time winner in the long jump on the year, Johnson was one of five freshman to compete in the long jump final on Thursday night. The Tulsa, Oklahoma native ends a historic season that includes the school record in the long jump at 6.32m, a gold medal at the A-10 Indoor Championships and a silver medal at the A-10 Outdoor Championships.
COACH'S QUOTE
"I am so proud of how Casey competed and really showed up. She had huge throws in the warm up and we knew if she connected on one of those that was it. She put together a great series and she stayed focused on all her attempts. At Nationals you're competing against the best of the best and most competitors hit personal bests just to qualify for finals so it was very exciting to watch as a coach and to see the new collegiate record fall by another competitor, which shows the strength of the competition that Casey had to compete against." -
Kevin Gilhuly-
"Kendall had an amazing freshman year. Capping it off with a 23rd place finish at the NCAA Championships. You can't ask for anything more than to finish your freshman year as an All-American. It is incredibly difficult to compete at such an elite level and Kendall has done nothing but rise to the occasion all year. I could not be more proud of her and the support her teammates have shown her. I am grateful for the opportunity to have coached her this year and I look forward to many more years of success with her." -
