WASHINGTON, D.C. – University of Dayton baseball players
J.J. Gatti and
Rylan Lujo were named Atlantic 10 Pitcher and Rookie of the Week, respectively, by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
Â
It's the first weekly award for Gatti, who missed the 2024 season because of injury, and is the third Rookie of the Week win for Lujo this season.
Â
Gatti pitched seven innings of scoreless baseball in a weekend series that saw Dayton and Davidson combine for 95 runs on 95 hits and slug 20 total homers. The Rockville Centre, N.Y. native struck out seven and allowed just two hits while walking one. After setting a career-high in strikeouts last week against Saint Louis, Gatti came back against Davidson to set a new career-best for innings pitched with seven.
Â
Lujo continued his hot streak this week, hitting an even .500 with a 1.611 OPS thanks to three home runs and a pair of doubles. The Coconut Creek, Fla. native drove in 11 runs, scored seven more, and was also 2-for-2 in stolen bases. Lujo had multi-hit performances in three of four games this week, including his second two-homer game of the season in the Flyers' series-opening win over the Wildcats.
Â
Dayton wraps an eight-game home stretch with a midweek showdown with Akron on Tuesday, April 1 at 3 p.m.
