DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton men’s soccer team travels to Edwardsville, Ill. for the SIUE Men’s Soccer Classic this weekend to battle SIU Edwardsville and UMKC in the final non-conference tournament of the season.
The Flyers captured the Wisconsin Soccer Classic via a goal differential tiebreaker last weekend. Dayton won its first match 2-0 over UW Milwaukee and battled to a 0-0 draw against Wisconsin, despite playing most of the second overtime period a man down.
Freshman Jordan Beckett was named Offensive MVP of the tournament, while Marlon Duran, Tyler Picard and Jack Pearson were selected to the all-tournament team along with Beckett. Picard (0.76 GAA, .810 save percentage) was also selected as the Atlantic 10’s Player of the Week on Monday after posting a pair of shutouts.
Dayton, led by Evan McCreary (2 goals), opens the weekend against the SIUE Cougars at 8:30 p.m. ET. on Friday. The Cougars are 2-4 this season behind senior Randy Roy’s two goals. In each of its losses, SIU has lost by one goal, including a 1-0 loss to No. 2 Tulsa. Junior goalkeeper Scott Meyer has seen the bulk of the action for the Cougars. In six games played, Meyer has a 0.77 goals against average and a .867 save percentage. Dayton is 2-0 all-time against SIUE.
The Flyers will close out the tournament against UMKC, 3-2-1 overall, on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET. Senior John Bayron Sosa and Junior Jimmy Simon lead the Roos with two goals each this season. Goalkeeper Ken Cooper has made all six starts this season for a .778 save percentage and a 0.94 goals against average for UMKC. This is the first meeting between UD and UMKC.
Dayton will host two more non-conference matches at Baujan Field before beginning its A-10 slate. The Flyers battle Oakland on Wednesday, Sept. 29 and Canisius on Sunday, Sept. 3 at 3:00 p.m. ET.
