DAYTON'S A-10 OPENER SPOILED BY BILLIKENS

DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton baseball team took on the Saint Louis Billikens in the series opener, which also started the conference season for both teams. Unfortunately, the Flyers fell to the preseason favorites 14-4 Friday.

Saint Louis took an early lead with three runs in the first frame of the game.

Dayton answered with a single run in the bottom of the first on Mel Skochdopole's RBI double to left center, cutting the deficit to two.

The Flyers narrowed the gap to just one run in the third when an error scored Skochdopole, making it a 3-2 ball game.

After the third inning though, the Billikens went on a tear, scoring 11 runs over the next three innings to put the game out of reach for Dayton.

The Flyers got two runs in the sixth inning on Kyle Robinett's RBI single and Nick Weybright's bases-loaded walk, but it would be too little too late for UD.

In the end, Dayton fell to Saint Louis 14-4.

Starting pitcher Parker Schrage (0-4) suffered the loss for the Flyers after giving up five earned runs on six hits in four innings of work.

The offense was led by designated hitter Aaron Huesman, who went 3-for-3, while Skochdopole and Jared Broughton added two hits each.

Dayton (5-12-1) will finish up the weekend series against Saint Louis with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
