In the top of the fourth, senior
Robby Sunderman walked, junior AJ Ryan singled, and both runners advanced to second and third. That is when Saturday's hero sophomore
Aaron Huesman stepped up and ripped a single to left, scoring both Sunderman and Ryan. Dayton took a 2-0 lead in a tight ball game.
USC-Upstate got the runs back in the bottom half of the inning however on a two-run home run Zach Krider. That moved the score to 2-2 heading into the fifth.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Spartans were able to take a 7-2 lead after an error, four straight singles, and a wild pitch led to a five-run rally for USC-Upstate. Three of those runs were unearned.
The Spartans went on to add two more runs to their tally in the seventh, making it a 9-2 game in their favor.
A grand slam by USC-Upstate in the eighth all but wrapped-up the game for the Spartans as they extended their advantage to 13-2.
After the offense stalled in the fourth, Dayton was unable to mount enough of a comeback to catch the Spartans and dropped the second game of the season.
