Day 1 Results
KINGSTON, R.I. – The 2014 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships got underway Saturday with the University of Dayton women's team competing in a number of events.
After one day of competition, the Flyers led all schools with 43 points. George Mason trailed by seven points in second, followed by Rhode Island (32), Duquesne (26), and UMass (26).
"We had some very strong performances today and advanced everyone we were expected to into finals tomorrow," said head coach
Jason Francis. "Tomorrow's competition will be very close and will come down to the relays at the end of the meet. It will be exciting to see how our women respond and how it all shakes out."
Maya Pedersen qualified for the finals in the 400m with a time of 56.94, the fourth-best time of the prelims.
In the pentathlon events,
Katy Garcia set a new personal record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.69.
Rebecca Maj finished first in the high jump with a mark of 1.70m while Garcia finished fourth with a jump of 1.64m. In the long jump, Maj had a distance of 5.11m, taking seventh and setting a new PR.
After all of the pentathlon events, both Maj (3379) and Garcia (3298) got points for Dayton, with fourth-place and sixth-place finishes respectively.
Chelsea VanHook qualified for the finals in the 800m with a time of 2:20.02, the seventh best time of the afternoon.
In the 60m hurdles,
Jordan Hoffman and
Maddi Schmidt qualified for the finals with times of 8.91 and 8.87 respectively in their qualifying heats. Schmidt's time was a Top 5 performance all-time at Dayton.
The 1000m saw two Flyers advance to the finals with
Nicole Cargill finishing second in the prelims with a time of 2:58.80 and
Olivia Albers finishing sixth with a time of 3:01.67. Albers' time was a new personal best.
Megan Collins had an 11
th-place finish in the 5000m event out of 20 competitors with a time of 17:55.37. That was a new personal record by almost 16 seconds.
In the 200m,
Noelle Tazioli finished ninth with a time of 25.38.
The distance medley relay team had a time of 11:52.37, finishing fourth out 11 teams.
Hanna Krizmanic took second in the pole vault with a height of 3.90m, tying her PR, while
Ashley DeMange was right behind her in third with a height of 3.80m.
Sarah Gaskell finished ninth with a mark of 3.30m.
Aly Weeman dominated in the weight throw, taking home the title with a mark of 19.00m and earning 10 points for UD. That was a new career high and the third-best mark in school history.
Miranda Nelson also had a great showing in the weight throw, hitting a mark of 16.65m for third-place overall.
In the long jump,
Hilary Lang finished 10
th with a jump of 5.40m.
Sydney Riethman added a new PR to the event as well.
The Flyers will finish up the Indoor Championships on Sunday in Rhode Island.
