Newport News, Va. -- The Atlantic 10 Conference announced its weekly awards on Monday afternoon and senior RHP
Ben Hughes was honored as the league's Co-Pitcher of the Week. Hughes, a Tipp City, Ohio native, was masterful on the mound on Saturday with seven shutout innings on the mound and a career-high eight strikeouts in Dayton's 8-0 win over St. Bonaventure. He also showed strong command on the mound with no walks and threw 33 of his first 38 pitches for strikes. Here is Hughes speaking after the game on Saturday:
The win was also Dayton's second consecutive shutout, which was the first time the Flyers have posted back-to-back goose eggs on the board for their opponents since May 2011.
Hughes becomes the second Dayton pitcher to earn the award this season, as
Hunter Wolfe also was recognized as Pitcher of the Week earlier this season after throwing a complete game and striking out 11 in a 2-1 win over Seton Hall on Feb. 23.
Dayton has five games this week, beginning tomorrow with a 3 p.m. game at Toledo before taking on Ohio State on Wednesday in Columbus at 6:30 p.m., which will also be broadcast on Big Ten Network Plus ($). The Flyers will then welcome in Richmond to town for a three-game set, as UD goes for its fifth straight conference series win, which dates back to last season's season-ending sweep over Davidson.
