NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The University of Dayton baseball team was picked to finish in fifth place in the 2023 Atlantic 10 Conference preseason poll. The Flyers earned 92 points in voting among the league's head coaches as announced by the Atlantic 10 office Tuesday, Feb. 7.
Davidson enters the season the top overall selection in the poll, securing 130 total points behind five first-place votes.
"We are very much looking forward to this year, to say the least," said head coach
Jayson King. "Our group will be ready to achieve all the things that are important to our program."
The Flyers return a veteran core for the 2023 campaign, starting with their top hitter over the last two seasons in seniorÂ
Marcos Pujols. The first baseman led the team in home runs (10) and runs batted in (41) in 2022 while batting .302 and was a first team Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection in 2021. Senior infielder
Keagan Calero also returns after hitting .287 and leading Dayton in runs scored (39). Dayton also returns its one-two punch of left-handed starters on the mound, as seniors
Ryan Steinhauer and
Mark Manfredi return to the rotation after leading UD in strikeouts at 63 and 62, respectively
Dayton's 2023 season starts the weekend of Feb. 17 as the Flyers travel to Bowling Green, Ky. to take on Western Kentucky. UD also travels to No. 2 Tennessee (Feb.24-26) and No. 16 Louisville (March 10-12) before kicking off conference play at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium against George Washington (March 31-April 2). The 2023 A10 Championship is set for May 23-27 at The Diamond in Richmond, Va., hosted by VCU.
