WASHINGTON, D.C. – University of Dayton forward
DaRon Holmes II has been named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for his performances in two Flyer wins last week.
Holmes was also recognized nationally by CoillegeInsider.com as the Lute Olson Award National Player of the Week.
The 6-foot-10 junior from Goodyear, Ariz., averaged 29.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 blocks for the week. He shot .679 (19-28) from the floor and .833 (20-24) from the line, and made one of the two three-pointers he took.
On Tuesday, Jan. 30, he had a 25-point, 12-rebound double-double against George Washington, and then matched his career high of 34 points in the come-from-behind win over St. Bonaventure on Friday, Feb. 2.
Holmes scored 25 of his 34 points in the game's final 18 minutes after the Bonnies had taken a seven-point lead. He also scored 12 of UD's last 16 points in the game's final 3:22. He was 10-of-15 from the field and 13-of-17 from the line. His 13 free throws made were a career high. He also blocked four shots in the SBU win.
Holmes was honored for the fourth time since conference play began six weeks ago. He leads the A-10 in scoring (20.0) and UD in rebounding (7.8). He is the only player in the league's Top 10 in scoring, rebounding, FG%, and blocked shots.
A member of the Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 Watch List, he is the only player in D-I who has more than 40 blocks, 40 dunks and 40 assists this season. Holmes has 48, 47 and 54 respectively. Holmes also has 22 threes and is shooting .400 (22-55) from deep. He had a total of seven made threes in his first two seasons at UD.
Dayton is 18-3 overall and tied for first in the A-10 with Richmond at 8-1. UD was ranked 21st in the AP poll and 19th in the Coaches poll last week.
The Flyers are on the road for two games this week, visiting Saint Joseph's on Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. ET, and VCU on Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
