SEVEN DAYTON TEAMS EARN APR RECOGNITION AWARDS

Men's and Women's Golf and Football Have Earned the Recognition All 10 Years

Indianapolis - Seven University of Dayton athletic programs were honored today when the NCAA recognized teams earning multi-year Academic Progress Rates in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. The Dayton teams honored for the 2013-14 academic year were: baseball, football, men's golf, women's cross country, women's golf, women's tennis and women's track.

For the fourth-consecutive year, UD also has the most teams honored of any school in Ohio.

The 1,124 teams publicly recognized for high achievement represent 696 women's teams and 428 men's or mixed squads, the highest ever in the decade since the NCAA began the Public Recognition Awards program. In 2014, 1,049 teams were recognized, marking an increase this year of 75 teams.

The scores required to be in the top ten ranged from 980 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport. This year, a record 953 teams earned public recognition with a perfect APR score.

Seven Flyer teams have received the APR Recognition Award at least five times in the 10 years of the honors program. They are men's and women's basketball, men's cross country, football, men's and women's golf, and rowing.

University of Dayton football, men's golf and women's golf have received the APR recognition award for 10 consecutive years – every time since the APR was instituted.

Dayton football was one of two programs honored from the Pioneer Football League, and the only one in Ohio. UD football is in an elite group. Dayton is one of eight football teams to earn the honor all 10 years. The others are: Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Davidson, Duke, Pennsylvania and Yale.

Dayton is one of two universities to have both its golf programs earn APR recognition all 10 years. The other is Dartmouth. Men's golf programs to earn the honor for 10 consecutive years are: Brown, Connecticut, Dartmouth, Dayton, Duke, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame. On the women's side the teams include: Boston, Bucknell, Butler, Dartmouth, Dayton, Elon, Gonzaga, North Carolina, Northwestern, Pennsylvania, Princeton, Urbana-Champaign, and Yale. Dayton is the only school in Ohio that its men's golf team earned APR recognition this year.

Dayton tied for third in the Atlantic 10 Conference with five of its teams in the league earning the APR Recognition Award.

The Flyers are one of three in the Atlantic 10 to have its baseball team honored (Davidson, Dayton, Fordham) and the Flyers are just one of two schools in Ohio to earn the recognition. The other is Xavier.

This marks the fourth-consecutive year that UD women's tennis has received the APR Recognition Award. They are one of six programs in the A-10, as well as in Ohio earning the honor this year.

Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR).  This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.  Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.  This year's release will again include recognition in the sport of football by subdivision (i.e. Football Bowl Subdivision and NCAA Football Championship Subdivision).

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship.  The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from 2010-11, 2011-2012, 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years.

Multi-year APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced May 27.
