DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton men’s soccer team returns to the friendly confines of Baujan Field this week to host the Oakland Golden Grizzlies and Canisius Griffins.
Last weekend, the Flyers finished second in the SIUE Men’s Soccer Classic after going 1-1. Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Rookie selection Marlon Duran scored his first collegiate goal to win the game 1-0 against UMKC on Sept. 26.
With the help of strong defensive play by the back four, junior Tyler Picard recorded his third shutout in four games. For their efforts, Picard, senior Tommy Watkins and junior Jack Pearson were each named to the Classic’s All-Tournament Team.
The Flyers are led by sophomore Evan McCreary who has five points (2 G, 1 A) on the season. Sophomore Ryan Bauer leads the team with two assists. Five of Dayton’s eight goals have come from newcomers to the team (Jordan Beckett, Marlon Duran, Oskar Kretzinger, Charles Leonhard and Andres Acevedo). Dayton’s shutout percentage ranks 37th in the nation at .430.
Dayton will square off against the Golden Grizzlies at 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Sept. 29. The Grizzlies are 2-5 this season with a 1-0 overtime win against then-No. 14 Drake and a 4-0 win over IPFW. Freshman Miche’le Lipari leads Oakland with three points (1 G, 1 A). Redshirt sophomore Tom Catalano and junior Winston Henderson are tied for the team-lead with two assists apiece. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Mitch Hildebrandt has a 1.43 goals against average in seven matches. Dayton is 3-6-4 all-time against Oakland.
The Flyers will close out the week with a 3 p.m. ET matchup against the Canisius Griffins on Sunday, Oct. 3. Canisius is 0-5 this season, with four of its five losses coming on the road. Sophomore Andrew Incho leads the Griffins with two points (1 G), while sophomore Sam Zarka leads in assists with one this season. Sophomore goalkeeper Kareem Gray has played 444 minutes for Canisius this season and has a 2.23 GAA. Dayton is 2-0 all-time against Canisius.
