DAYTON FINISHES DAY ONE OF A-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS

KINGSTON, R.I. – The University of Dayton women's track and field program began competition at the 2015 Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships on Saturday.

After the first day of events, the Flyers are in fourth place with 26 points.

"We had a number of women step up with some big performances today," said Head Coach Jason Francis. "We will need more of the same tomorrow."

Flyers Erin Reese and Miranda Nelson took gold and silver respectively in the weight throw, taking over the podium for Dayton. With a throw of 15.93m, the freshman Reese posted a new personal record and earned her first conference championship. The senior Nelson was right behind her in second with a distance of 15.61m. It marked the second straight season that a Flyer took home the indoor weight throw title.

The 800m saw a pair of personal bests and two student athletes qualify for the finals. Freshman Brittany Fisher had a career best time of 2:15.81, finishing fourth in the prelims and posting the second best time in school history. Senior Chelsea VanHook also qualified with the seventh-best time of the day.

Freshman Emily Leonard had a strong day in the 5000m with the fourth-best time in school history. The Park Ridge, Ill. native finished seventh with a time of 17:16.07.

The Flyers will finish up the A-10 Indoor Championships on Sunday.
