At the 2022 A-10 Indoor Championships at George Mason University, the Flyers had four first-place finishes, several top-three finishes, and collected eight all-conference awards. The Flyers' score of 84.5 points put them in third place out of the 13 women's teams in the A-10. Lainey Studebaker, a Flyer grad student and now alum, set the second-fastest 5000m race mark in UD history at 16:34.53 at the A-10 championships last year. Former Flyer, Chante Clinkscale, also set the fastest 60m dash time in school history at this meet with her 7.33 second finish.
There are also returning Flyers who had remarkable performances at last year's A-10 championships. Hannah Lindenman set her PR for weight throw at the championships at 17.21m while earning a seventh place finish. Senior Angela Braga set PRs in both the 1000m and the mile. Also, Emily Sreenan set her PR for the mile and finished in 9th place overall. Junior Zoe Chappelle set her current PRs in both the 3000m and 5000m races. Senior Melissa Weidner also set her PR for the 3000m at last year's A-10 Championships. These Flyers will all be returning for the competition this weekend, which will likely be the last indoor championship appearance for many of these seniors.
These upperclassmen, who are now veterans in the A-10 Championships, will act as mentors for the nine freshman Flyers who will be competing alongside them this weekend. "Going into this year, our coaching staff knew this young group was special," said Associate Head Coach Kevin Gilhuly. "We have a lot of talent mixed with an extremely competitive mindset that is going to be showcased at the A-10 Championships this weekend. We have seen a lot of growth from each event group with strong leadership."
Gilhuly also shared "Competing at the University of Rhode Island has historically produced huge PRs for us at the A-10 Championships, and this group is primed, ready, and hungry to compete." The last time the Flyers competed in Kingston for the A-10 Indoor Championships was in 2020. At this meet, they set 17 PRs, six top-three finishes, two top-five all-time marks in UD history, and even a school record for the 5000m race. This mark was set by Emily Borchers at 16:26.13 and has not been broken since.
Many of the Flyers that are competing this weekend had a week of rest to prepare for the indoor championships. The last time the Flyers were in full force was at the Marshall Invitational. At this meet, they set 19 PRs and five top-five marks in UD history. Freshman Jadyn Haywood distinguished herself by setting the third-fastest indoor 200m dash time in school history while earning A-10 Rookie of the Week for her performance. At Marshall University, Grace Homan set the fourth-best shot put mark in UD history while earning first place. Then at the Flag City Open last week, Homan set a new fourth-best shot put mark with a complementary A-10 Field Performer of the Week award as well. This weekend, the Flyers will see if they can write a perfect ending to the fantastic story of their 2023 indoor season.
