ALPHONSE SCHUMACHER - Men's Basketball 1912-1914

Alphonse Schumacher is the earliest varsity athlete to earn All-America notice after leading his St. Mary’s Institute teams to undefeated seasons in 1911-12 and 1912-13. The Helms Foundation looked back at the dawn of college basketball, and chose ten-players from the All-America teams to honor the sport’s pioneers beginning with the 1905 season.

Schumacher was named both the 1912 and 1913 Helms Foundation All-America teams. He led St. Mary’s to a 13-0 mark in 1912, outscoring the opposition 413-212. The next year, the record was 11-0 and the scoring margin was even more dominant 565-246.

Father Scumacher went on to the priesthood, and served as parish priest at St. Brigid’s in Xenia, Ohio, until his death in 1966.
