Harry Baujan was born on May 24, 1894. Baujan was a graduate of Notre Dame.
Baujan served as the head basketball coach from 1923-1928. During his tenure as the
men’s basketball coach, he posted a 46-38 record. It was coaching football however,
where Baujan made a name for himself. He was the head coach of the varsity football
team from 1923 to 1946. He was nicknamed “The Blonde Beast” for his strict
disciplinary coaching style. At UD, he posted a record of 124-64-8 (65%). In 1961, in
honor of his stellar coaching career, the University of Dayton named the football field,
“Baujan Field”. Baujan field is now the soccer field and is a very scenic site in the
middle of UD’s campus.

Aside from being a college football coach at UD, Baujan
played two seasons in the NFL for the Cleveland Tigers and Cleveland Indians. For his
accomplishments at the University of Dayton, he was inducted into the College Football
Hall of Fame in 1990. Baujan passed away on December 30, 1976 at 82 years old. He
will forever be remembered as a great early founder and coach in UD athletics.
