JERMAINE BAILEY - Football 1998-2001

A late bloomer who never started a high school game while at Cincinnati Moeller, tailback Jermaine Bailey had an All-American career at the University of Dayton.  After limited duty as a freshman and sophomore, Bailey burst on the scene as a junior, gaining 1,373 yards with 13 TD’s.  He was also UD’s leading receiver with 18 catches for 252 yards.

Bailey was named First Team Football Gazette Mid-Major All-America as the Flyers finished 8-3 and tied for first in the Pioneer Football League in 2000.

The emergence of quarterback Kelly Spiker allowed UD to go to a more balanced attack in 2001, so Bailey’s numbers diminished to 887 yards rushing and 13 receptions, but he was named PFL

Offensive Player of the Year.  He gained 109 yards in the PFL championship game, and scored a TD on his final career carry in the championship game victory vs. Jacksonville.

He was First Team All-PFL in 2000 and 2001.  Bailey is fifth in career rushing at UD (2,299 yards) and had 13 games of 100 yards or more in his career, a UD record.  He also holds the UD single-game rushing record (251 yards vs. Drake, 10/21/00).  He was a member of three PFL championship teams, which went a combined 30-12.  Bailey was team MVP and co-captain as a senior.

Bailey lives in Xenia, Ohio, and teaches in the Centerville City Schools.  He is an assistant football coach for the Elks.
