WILLIAM "BILLY" SMITH - Football - 1953-1957

Though only 5’9” and 160 pounds, Billy Smith was a force to be reckoned with as the Flyers’ halfback in the mid-1950s.  Earning nicknames like Smackover, Billy the Blur, and Dayton’s Pocket Rocket, Smith dominated opposing defenses at the University of Dayton, following his stint in the US Army.  In his junior year, Smith carried the ball 105 times for 491 yards and 3 touchdowns.  He also contributed on defense with 4 interceptions.  These accomplishments led to his recognition as the team’s MVP.  Smith then became a captain his senior year, and again rushed for over 400 yards.

After his spectacular play at UD, Smith returned in 1959 to become the Flyers’ running backs coach.  Smith even married his college sweetheart Joyce from UD, former captain of the UD Flyerettes.
