JIM STANGLE - Football 1967-69

Jim Stangle was a three-year starter at offensive tackle for the Flyer football team from 1967-69, opening holes for now fellow Hall of Famers Gary Kosins, Bernie Kress, Billy Mayo, and Mike Wilson.

Originally from Dayton, and a graduate of Alter High School, Stangle was a linchpin on teams for coach John McVay.

As a senior, he was named the winner of the White-Allen Most Valuable Player Award.  He is one of just nine offensive linemen to be named team MVP in UD football.  He also played in the East-West Shrine All-Star game in San Francisco.

Stangle was also named the University's Outstanding Student-Athlete as a senior and served as president of the Monogram Club.

As a junior, Stangle was the recipient of the John L. Macbeth Memorial Scholar-Athlete.

Stangle's two sons, Matt and Ryan, played football for the Flyers under Hall of Fame coach Mike Kelly in the 1990's.  His brother Tom was a standout offensive lineman, also at UD, from 1963-66.
