MARK ASHMAN – Basketball 1996-2000

Dayton’s best back-to-the-basket scorer since Henry Finkel, Mark Ashman never missed a start in his college career. The big man from St. Marys, Ohio started 119 games from 1996 to 2000, setting a Flyer record that stood until 2010.

His career total of 1,449 points is 20th in UD history.  He had season averages of 8.6, 11.7,15.2, and 13.1 points in his four seasons wearing the Red and Blue, and averaged 12.2 points in his career.

Ashman was a two-time White-Allen MVP award winner, earning the honor outright as a junior and sharing the award with Tony Stanley in 2000.  Ashman also won the Sharpenter Rebounding Award as a junior and senior and led the team in blocked shots for three straight years. He is fifth in career blocked shots at UD (96).

Part of Oliver Purnell’s first recruiting class at Dayton, he ended his career by helping lead Dayton back to the NCAA tournament after a 10-year drought.  The Flyers were 22-9 in 1999-2000 and won the Atlantic 10 West Division championship. Ashman was named First Team All-Atlantic10 as a senior.

He is currently the head men’s basketball coach for Wright State University’s Lake Campus in Celina, Ohio.  In an odd coincidence, this is the second consecutive year a graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School has been inducted into the UD Athletic Hall of Fame. Damon Goodwin was inducted in the Hall of Fame Class of 2010.
