HERB EISELE - Men's Basketball, Football, and Baseball -1922-1926

Herb Eisele was born and raise right outside of Cleveland, Ohio. He went to High School at Notre Dame Cathedral Latin (NDCL) in Chardon, Ohio. He then went on to play for the University of Dayton starting in the year 1922. He was 5-6 and weighed about 152 pounds playing the offensive line for the UD Flyers. Eisele was chosen to be a Little All-American, All-Ohio, and All-Catholic selection for his football talents. He was an anchor on the line and was chosen as the captain of the 1926 Flyers baseball team. An excellent student-athlete, Eisele excelled in all three sports and was a model individual.

After his time at UD, Eisele returned to coach at his alma mater, NDCL, from 1926-1947 and compiled a 131-33 record. During that span, he won 36 straight games and 3 state titles. After his time at NDCL, Eisele went on to become the Head Coach at nearby John Carroll University from 1947-1959. In 1951, he assumed the role of Director of Athletics in addition to his coaching duties.

Shortly after dying in 1985, alumni and former JCU players raised funds to construct the “Herb Eisele Blue-Gold Room” in his honor. Starting in 1963, Eisele was inducted into his first Hall of Fame when he was chosen to be included in the 1963 University of Dayton Hall of Fame Class. In 1969, Eisele was inducted in John Carroll’s Hall of Fame for his coaching and athletic directing positions. Finally, in 2006, Eisele was one of twenty-two inducted into the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Hall of Fame.
