JAMES "JIM" HANBY - Football - 1946-1949

James Hanby was a Senior Education major from Dayton, Ohio. He was a standout guard and a three year letterman in football (’46, ’47, ’48). In 1948 James was named the captain of the football team.  James beat out two men who played at UD before World War II and he ended up starting all but five games in his three year career. He was a graduate of Stivers Highschool in 1946. Throughout his career at UD Jim was known for his toughness as he played despite two bad knees, it was said that he could’ve gone pro had he not been prohibited by his knees. One writer went as far as saying, “Hanby has got to be – if not the toughest – one of the toughest lineman to play at UD.” He was a two time All Ohio team selection.

After his UD career Hanby went on to be an administrator at Stivers-Patterson Highschool from which he retired in 1978. James and his wife Doris lived in Tipp City, Ohio.
