PAT JAYSON - Coach & Trainer 1973-84

Pat Jayson was a standout athlete while attending the University of Dayton in the mid-1960's. She started three seasons at left wing in field hockey, two years at guard in basketball and placed second in state in tennis doubles in 1967. But it was as a coach, trainer and role model when women's athletics exploded at the collegiate level where she had her greatest impact.

As a coach, she was head coach of the Flyer field hockey team from 1973 to 1980 and had a career record of 84-29-14. Her UD field hockey teams won the state championship in 1977 and 1979, and in 1980 placed second in the state, second in the region, and placed ninth at the nationals.

In addition, she coached the UD women's tennis and softball teams, and was an assistant coach in women's basketball.

Jayson was also UD's first women's athletic trainer. She served as a volunteer trainer from 1973-75 while she was also coaching, part-time trainer for one more year, and then full-time from 1976 until she went to what was then St. Elizabeth Medical Center in 1984.

In 1976, she was one of the first three women in Ohio and one of the first 100 in the country to be certified by the National Athletic Trainer's Association. She was the prime mover in establishing the University of Dayton's Athletic Training Curriculum and was presented the University of Dayton Merit Award of Alumni Recognition in 1982 for her work in this area.

She has returned to intercollegiate athletics as the academic advisor for men's and women's athletic teams at Sinclair community College in Dayton.
